How can I tell if the leather is real?

I have something and it doesn't say if it's leather or manmade anywhere on it. I'm only concerned about one part of it being leather. I can't use the smell to determine and if it's leather, it's more of a hard leather instead of a soft supple leather. Are there other ways to know if it's leather other than waiting until it breaks in and seeing how it holds up? It usually has that leathery smell.

Try to scratch it a little bit...If a scar is left then it's real leather.

If there's an inconspicuous spot on the part you want to test, take a pin (or something similar like a needle) and heat it up in the flame of a lighter. You will probably want to hold the pin with a pair of pliers, unless you're just hardcore like that. Press the pin into the chosen inconspicuous spot and take a whiff. If it smells like burning plastic, it isn't leather. If it smells like burning hair, it is leather.

I agree with commenter number 1. Just smell it you'll really know the which's the real one.
